Brighton MET students display innovation at Global Game Jam 2025
Games Animation & Special Effects students at Brighton MET have been creating and designing games in this year’s annual Global Game Jam.
The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is a California-based charity dedicated to empowering people worldwide to learn, experiment, and create games together in a safe and inclusive environment.
A game jam is similar to a hackathon, where participants collaborate over a short period to develop games based on a central theme revealed at the event’s start.
Each year, the event attracts tens of thousands of participants, known as ‘jammers’, at hundreds of physical and virtual locations around the world.
This year’s central theme for the jam was ‘bubble’, and students were tasked with creating an innovative game around this theme.
To help students, lecturers organised for a variety of local game developers to come in, mentor student and support them with their game development.
In particular, the B&H game development community demonstrated remarkable generosity with their time and commitment, with 18 developers offering their support throughout the week.
Alex Moore, Gameplay Programmer at Serious Point Games, and one of the developers who came in to offer students support and advice, said:
“Their games are all really impressive, especially as for most of them it is their first or second time making a game, so it’s all very impressive with what they have produced.
“I think it allows everyone to express their personality and what they can do within a certain amount of time, everyone is under the same conditions, and it allows everyone to show what they can do.”
Paul Riley, Principal of Brighton MET College, added:
“It’s fantastic to see the creativity and dedication our students have demonstrated during the Global Game Jam. Events like this offer a valuable opportunity for learners to collaborate, gain industry insights, and develop essential creative and technical skills.
“I’m consistently impressed by their ability to bring ideas to life in such a short timeframe.”
