Brighton MET College Joins Growing National Network of Colleges of Sanctuary

17 July 2026

Inclusivity came to the forefront when Brighton MET College announced it had been awarded College of Sanctuary Status.

This award recognises the hard work that the college has put in to make every student’s education safe, supportive and empowering.

It reaffirms the college’s commitment to ensuring that any and every student, no matter their background or life circumstances, feels welcome to apply to any course offered.

The Further Education (FE) College of Sanctuary network is a growing network of colleges which have committed to helping break down barriers to those who may be seeking safety and helping them to access and progress in education.

It aims to overcome barriers people seeking safety face in accessing and progressing in education and to contribute to fostering understanding, connection and belonging in their communities.

The announcement was made at the college’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Community Celebration, which brought together students and families, staff and local community groups to celebrate the achievement of every ESOL student.

During the celebrations, there was also a series of certificates of achievement handed out, recognising some of the standout students who have pushed themselves and excelled this academic year.

Guests who attended were treated to a selection of food from around the world, as well as a variety of songs performed by ESOL lecturers, including a singalong of ‘Freed from Desire’ by Gala.

Matt Vaughan, Principal of Brighton MET College, said:

“Achieving College of Sanctuary Status is a proud moment for Brighton MET College and reflects the values that underpin everything we do. We believe education should be accessible, welcoming and transformative for everyone, regardless of their background or the challenges they may have faced.

“This recognition celebrates the dedication of our staff, students and wider community in creating a culture where all people feel valued, supported and empowered to achieve their goals.

“We are committed to continuing this work and ensuring Brighton MET remains a place where everyone is valued, fully supported and feels they belong.”
