Brighton MET Hosts joyful ESOL community celebration to honour students

18 July 2025

Brighton MET College was filled with colour, music and laughter as it hosted an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Community Celebration, marking the end of the college year.

The event brought together students, staff, families and a variety of community groups, to celebrate the achievements of the college’s ESOL students.

Those in attendance enjoyed a vibrant mix of art activities, interactive games, and lively sing-alongs led by teachers. The event also featured a variety of culinary delights shared by some of the students and concluded with an inspiring short film screening by the local charity, Sanctuary Runners.

The celebration also marked a significant milestone for the college, as the college recently signed a pledge to become a College of Sanctuary, committing to support and welcome people seeking safety in the UK.

Paul Riley, Principal of Brighton MET, said:
“This celebration truly reflects the spirit of our college, and our aim to be inclusive, vibrant, and community-focused. It’s been a joy to honour the achievements of our ESOL students and to stand alongside our community partners in supporting sanctuary seekers.

“Becoming a College of Sanctuary is more than a pledge, it’s a promise to continue building a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and empowered.”

A massive thank you to all the community groups who attended, including:

Sussex Mindfulness Centre, Sussex Interpreting Services, Brighton Multicultural Women’s Cycle Club (The BMWs), Gladrags, Sanctuary Runners and Brighton Table Tennis Club
