We are proud to be working in partnership with Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to educate and support the next generation of healthcare workers through a new Health and Care Academy. The Academy provides students with work placement opportunities, professional mentors and access to guest lectures and workshops delivered by experienced NHS staff.
We had the opportunity to speak to Elisha who completed their placement at Mill View Hospital in Hove.
How was your experience on your placement?
“I had an amazing experience at Mill View Hospital. Despite COVID getting in the way, which resulted in a shorter experience, I did manage to learn a lot in the time I was there. My mentor Linda was so lovely and made me feel really at ease. She provided me with so much information and always answered my questions. It was so nice to see how the staff worked throughout the day, the work shifts were so well planned out and I thoroughly enjoyed learning new things within a healthcare environment. I had a great time and feel privileged to of had some experience.”
What skills did you learn on your placement?
“I learned many new skills on my placement, as I have never worked in a healthcare environment before. Team working organisation skills were always well structured. I followed a phlebotomist around who took blood from patients and also ECGs. This was great to watch and learn from. I learned what an ‘eye sight’ shift was about (what to do and how to deal with stressful events if occurred). Note-taking first thing in the morning on arrival from night hour staff (I didn’t take notes, but was nice to listen in on what happened on the night shifts, medications taken and certain events, if occurred, was noted by the head staff of the day).”
Has your placement encouraged you to pursue a career in the healthcare sector?
“Yes, it has. It has definitely increased my aspiration to become a midwife. I enjoyed every moment, learning new things that I can hold onto and it gave me a real insight into the healthcare profession. It was everything I expected if not more! I was very lucky to have this experience.”
