They’re in style! Brighton MET students impress at end of year showcase

Theatrical Makeup, Hairdressing, and Fashion students from Brighton MET College came together to display their work at St Bartholomew’s Church.
The showcase marked the start of METFest, a festival showcasing the talents of Brighton MET’s Creative Industries students, with a wide range of events planned across June.
The show, which took place on Thursday 13 June, featured five runway exhibits based on different themes, showcasing approximately 125 designs. Awards were presented at the end, with prizes donated by various sponsors.
In attendance were some Brighton-based fashion, hair and make-up experts, including Emma Howie, Angela Youngs, and Laurence Teillet.
These VIPs served as judges, and scored the different designs earlier in the day, with awards being given out based on their scores.
The prize for best in show was won by hairdressing student Hannah Dooley. She said “I’ve made a dryad. The theme was ‘out of this world’ and I’m just really into nature, fantasy, and stuff so I’ve turned one of my best friends into a dryad!
“It took me about a month to put it all together. Last Monday, we had about four hours where George [the model] had to stand while I was gluing things, so he’s been a proper trooper.
“I can’t believe it. I just really appreciate it. Honestly – everything here tonight has been absolutely incredible. Some of the prosthetics, the attention to detail in all of the pieces is just phenomenal.”

Maria Edney, Head of Learning for the Creative Industries at Brighton MET, added: “This event is a testament to the hard work, passion, and creativity of our students.
“It’s incredible to see their visions come to life and to celebrate their achievements in such a stunning venue. We aim to provide our students with opportunities to shine and this show is a perfect example of their talent and dedication.”
The event allows students to exhibit their work in a public forum to people in the fashion, media makeup and hair industry.
Lily Green, one of the student designers, revealed: “I think it’s a really good opportunity, we had a similar event last year and there were a lot of opportunities to talk to many people in the same industry that I want to get into.”
Livia Brooks described how “this opportunity is massive, really, because it’s a great experience and it’s also just a taste of like something that we can do the future, and also inspiration from everyone else’s dresses and garments really and ideas.”
Paul Riley, Principal of Brighton MET, said “The creativity and dedication displayed by our students are truly inspiring.
“Events like these not only showcase their incredible talents but also highlight the vibrant and supportive community we foster at Brighton MET. We are immensely proud of all our students and the hard work they have put into making METFest a success.”
Thank you to the event sponsors: Kryolan, Ellisons, Capital Hair and Beauty, Wella Professionals, and Equip the Creative.
