Pens to Publication: Brighton MET English Students Impress in National Competition
English students at the college recently showcased their creativity in an exciting Young Writers Challenge, swapping their thinking caps for pens to bring their ideas to life.
Focusing on the theme ‘Stranger Sagas’, it challenged the 97 entrants from the college, as well as students from other schools and colleges to write a mysterious or thrilling short story in 100 words or fewer.
Each submission will be collated, with the Young Writers team going on to create a selection of stories for submission as part of a series of short stories.
This theme encouraged students to explore the mysterious and weird, including encounters with the unknown or unexpected.
Students came up with a range of submissions, including stories titled ‘Warped’, ‘The Night Shift’ and ‘Doppelganger’, all of which had a flavour of the strange and unexpected.
The short word count meant that students had to sharpen their English skills, as they had to consider their vocabulary choices. This helped build students’ confidence as they became published authors.
Carla London, one of the students whose work was submitted, said:
“I entered the competition in class, and I wrote a scary story about someone hearing noise in an empty house, called “The Noise”. It was a surprise when I found out I was going to be a published author. I was very proud of myself.”
Denys Tunskyi, who also entered the competition, said:
“I was excited and surprised, because it was my first story. It was an imaginative story based on real action. It was unexpected to be an author!
