Step Into North Laine's Story: Exhibition at Brighton MET College Shares Half a Century of History

2 October 2026

Brighton MET College is proud to be hosting ‘North Laine at 50: A Story’, a captivating exhibition covering the rich history of one of Brighton’s most iconic neighbourhoods.

The exhibition, organised by the North Laine Community Association (NLCA), reveals the story of how residents, artists, businesses and campaigners came together to protect and transform the North Laine area into the vibrant area it is today.

Currently on display in the college’s Pelham Foyer, it covers the illustrious history of the area over the last 50 years through a fascinating collection of pictures, stories, news clippings, and visual displays.

With a variety of fascinating stories, from hidden histories to the power of community action, there is something for each and every visitor.

The exhibition is part of the wider celebrations marking 50 years of the NCLA and the campaign to save the North Laine area from a proposed elevated road scheme, which would have caused extensive demolition of the area.

The 1967 plan involved a proposal to build an elevated roadway from Preston Circus to Bond Street, which would also have included a car park of 1,600 spaces, and would have seen more than 130 houses demolished.

Sue Delafons, Trustee of the North Laine Community Association (NLCA) and curator of the exhibition, said:

“It’s important people understand that this unique area, the heart of the city,  was nearly destroyed by developers 50 years ago and still needs protecting and appreciating today.”

Georgina Hooper, Head of Learning for Creative Industries, Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy at the college, added:

“For our Brighton MET students, and visitors to the college, this exhibition offers more than just a journey through local history. It is an opportunity to explore the relationship between place, identity and creativity, and to consider how individuals and communities can shape the future of a city.

“Whether you study art, fashion, photography, design, hair and beauty or any discipline, the exhibition provides fresh inspiration and a deeper understanding of the city that surrounds us.

“We strongly encourage students to visit, engage with the stories on display and discover how creativity, collaboration and community have helped make Brighton the unique and dynamic city it is today.”

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm and is at the college until Friday 9 October 2026.
