Brighton MET students impress the public with Oxfam window displays

16 February 2026

Fashion & Textiles pathway students recently took part in a groundbreaking collaboration with Oxfam and former college alumni and designer Gussie O’Connor.

Some of the students from the project stood outside the Oxfam with their designs

Students had the opportunity to create fashion pieces for a window display at the Oxfam charity shops on North Street and London Road in Brighton.

The students, who study Foundation Art & Design, were tasked with using unsold shirts kindly donated by the charity.

This was with the purpose of promoting sustainability by reimagining old garments into new, inspiring designs, which would otherwise go straight to textile recycling.

The display also encouraged onlookers to do their bit to be part of a wider sustainable collaboration by presenting QR codes to view the wider collection, donate items, and volunteer with Oxfam.

Gussie O’Connor is an award-winning fashion designer who studied Art & Design at the college and has since gone on to study at Kingston University.

Matthew Vaughan, Principal at Brighton MET College, said:
“It is always exciting to see our students team up with local organisations to take part in these fantastic projects, which give students the opportunity to present their work to the public.

“Projects like these also show Brighton MET and the Chichester College Group’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, and that our students are at the forefront of pushing this message.”
